Annual Auxiliary Awards Luncheon
September 9th marked the Annual Awards Luncheon of the BCMH Auxiliary. The event was held at P J Berry’s in Sutton with entertainment provided by Auxiliary President, Jan Dobbins. Auxiliary members, hospital staff and guests in attendance enjoyed a delicious meal and wonderful fellowship as always. Following lunch, BCMH Board Chairman, Barbara Adams, expressed her sincere appreciation for the ongoing financial support of the Auxiliary which helps ‘keep the doors of BCMH open and saving lives’. She stated, “BCMH is a vital entity in the community. People are often stabilized at our local hospital and transferred to where they need to be.” Barbara added, “When we see those pink jackets, we know you are there to help. It is good to see new faces and those who have been here a long time and have proven to be great leaders. Please continue volunteering!”
During the recognition portion of the program, new members were honored in addition to those achieving milestones in volunteer hours. A.W.V.H.A. Representative / Central District Counselor, Flora Waite, and State President, Diana Simmons, assisted with the presentation of awards. Mary Ellen Duffield provided a brief history acknowledging ‘progressive thinking individuals’ for the origination of our local hospital and the Auxiliary following the closure of both Gassaway and Sutton hospitals. She stated, “In the beginning, there were around 200 Auxiliary members, some of which remain active today. We lost four original members recently and we salute them: Lena Barton, Jean Hopkins, Bernice Moore and Virginia Schiefer.” Members of the original group in attendance were Hazel Riffle, Mae James, Wilda Sears and Kathryn Minnich. The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Margaret Moore for her dedicated efforts through the years. Mary Ellen added, “Our top priority is to be sure patients have what they need; and it is a cooperative effort with employees, administration and patients.” Terry Hoover, Auxiliary Coordinator, and Martha Nottingham, Administrative Assistant, were recognized for their ongoing help with Auxiliary projects. At the conclusion of the program, door prizes were awarded to several lucky attendees.
